Becoming a disciple is about following a philosophy or a person so closely that your life, actions, and words reflect your devotion. The most prominent example of such devotion these days is in the political sphere, especially in America.
However, God does not want blind devotion.
Relationship with you is what He yearns for, and pursues. But how can you have a relationship with someone you don’t know? You may have heard about Him, even gone to His house a time or two, but the people claiming to be His friends don’t always leave you with a good impression.
That’s why, like with anything, it’s best to go to the source to get your information. In this case, instead of relying on what you have been told or what you think you know about God, it’s time to get to know Him directly.
Getting To Know You…
Like it says on the welcome page, discipleship is about you digging deeper into your faith, but how can you do that if you don’t know the One you are supposed to have faith in?
This post is the first in the “Who is God?” series I want to walk you through. You see, we are just like God in a way. We were made in His image; like Him, we have a character, likes and dislikes, and unique personality.
God gifts us with the ability to get to know Him by allowing us to have His story, to Know His names, and to talk with Him personally.
What Is In A Name?
Shakespeare had it right when he wrote that a name will not change the traits of what it labels. Roses will still smell like roses even if they were called daffodils. In the same way, you and I would still be who are even if we called ourselves something different. Names for us today don’t always have significant mean as they do in other cultures.
However, God’s story begins and really ends in an eastern culture. Here a name is given to reveal character in some way.
Throughout the Old Testament God collects different names each one revealing an aspect of who He is to those who follow Him. In this way, God is giving us a chance to truly get to know Him and understand who we have devoted ourselves.
Each article in this series will be a snapshot of the meaning and history behind the different names of God. The resources for this study will be the Bible, Names of God a Moody Classic by Nathan Stone, and Tony Evans’ book The Power of God’s Names.
I hope this series will open your eyes to who God really is, and not who you think He is through your own limited experiences. Remember even those who love Him most can do a poor job of representing Him. Please, meet God with an open mind to what He wants to reveal to you.
